What is Organic Cotton? Cotton grown without the use of chemical pesticides, insecticides, synthetic fertilizers, herbicides, or GMO (genetically modified organism) seeds
Colors and Patterns? We can make panels using any of the fabrics from Harmony Art. Cut Samples can be obtained through Organic Cotton Plus. We can make panels using any of their materials as well! Just let us know which pattern/color and we will do the rest.
What are the benefits of organic fabrics? Organic cotton is grown, harvested, and processed without the use of many toxic chemicals. The chemicals used for conventional cotton find their way into the environment, water supply, and our homes. Some of these chemicals are highly toxic and some are probable carcinogens. Organic goods are sustainable, that is, they are produced in a manner that does not strip the environment of resources and does not rely on chemicals to produce. See a comparison chart here People with allergies and chemical sensitivity especially benefit from organic cotton as conventional cotton may retain harmful toxic residues.
Who certifies the fabrics as organic? All of our current fabrics (except Interlining - see below) are produced in India and certified organic by SKAL. In 2008 we anticipate GOTS certification as well. The Interlining is grown in Texas and certified by the Texas Department of Agriculture to the USDA Organic standards.
What about the colors and dyes? The dyes are water-based, low-impact, fiber-reactive or natural dyes with low metal and sulfur content. They are processed using strict toxicity screening and biodegradability/eliminability standards. Whitening: Achieved with environmentally safe peroxide.
Are the linings and interlinings organic too? Yes, both the lining and interlining are organic and held to same standards as the drapery fabrics. The flannel interlining is natural in color and the lining is 100% cotton whitened using safe, non-toxic peroxide.
